8 to Educate

Children's Month draws to a close in the Philippines and we're reminded of the importance of education in the lives of the country's children. Virlanie Foundation, Inc and eight high-end restaurants in Serendra and along Bonifacio High Street in Global City, Taguig have partnered on a new campaign to highlight education for those who perhaps need it the most: street children.

From now until December 31st, 2009, eating at any one of the eight participating restaurants will help educate a street child. Arama, Cav, Chelsea, Cupcakes by Sonja, Fu, Healthy Kitchen, Sentro 1771 and Xocolat will make a donation to Virlanie for every designated menu item ordered. Eager to participate in the campaign, the staff of each restaurant has been learning about Virlanie and its eight educational initiatives.

Virlanie and its campaign partners are keen that concern for education extends beyond mealtimes and they've made it easy for patrons to support the education of a street child from only PHP800 per month.

Virlanie Foundation is a private non-sectarian child-caring institution in Manila. Its cares for street children who are abandoned, abused, made to work and are found living in the streets. They're welcomed into its homes. Annually it cares for more than 300 children in its 12 homes and last year cared for 700 more through its outreach programs.

Support fo Virlanie's cause comes from many quarters. For a year already, world famous singer Billy Crawford, has been the foundation's Goodwill Ambassador. Recruited by founder Dominique Lemay, Billy has seen Virlanie's work up close: "I visited the homes and it was really impressive how these kids are being taken care of. It's all year round, not just for the Christmas season." Billy freely admits that " I wouldn't be who I am today if I hadn't been 'in need' at some point in my life... and it's on those crucial times when any helping hand is always a blessing." Billy understands the importance of education and backs Virlanie on its newest campaign to come to the aid of the city's most vulnerable children.

On November 21, 2009, witness Mixed Martial Arts action at its finest! The Universal Reality Combat Championship presents the COLT 45 URCC "Onslaught." This time, the URCC moves to its new home the World Trade Center! The event boasts of FOUR title bouts! Headed by the Bantamweight titlebout between reigning champ Justin "The Shocker" Cruz of Spike 22 Guam versus former titleholder Mark "The Machine" Sangiao! Almost four years since his last fight inside the URCC ring, Sangiao will try to reclaim the belt he once had. Does he still have it or will Cruz "SHOCK" the highland fighter?

Featured in the Co-Main event fight is the Middleweight title rematch between titleholder Zhang Tie Quan of China versus former champ Caloy "Bad Boy" Baduria. Baduria lost his title to Zhang at last year’s URCC Indestructible event which made people doubt Baduria’s capability as a formidable Middleweight contender. When Baduria went up to the light heavyweight division at last July’s 14th installment "Aggression," and severely punished Cuban fighter Remand Lazaro for the belt, he specifically asked for a rematch with Zhang with the goal to be the first to occupy two belts at the URCC. Eight other fights showcase Filipino MMA fighters slugging it out for the chance to be called the best MMA fighter in the country!

Universal Reality Combat Championship (URCC) is the first professional mixed martial arts event based in the Philippines founded in 2002 by Filipino BJJ fighter Alvin Aguilar, who has been in the underground fighting scene for some time. It is considered a professional sport in the Philippines and is under the supervision of the Games and Amusements Board (GAB).

STEP DOWN

UPUAN
Gloc 9 feat. Jeazell

Kayo po na naka upo,
Subukan nyo namang tumayo
Baka matanaw, at baka matanaw ninyo
Ang tunay na kalagayan ko

Ganito kasi yan eh...

Verse 1:

Chorus:

Kayo po na naka upo,
Subukan nyo namang tumayo,
Baka matanaw, at baka matanaw ninyo
Ang tunay na kalagayan ko

Verse 2:

Kaya...

Wag kang masyadong halata
Bato-bato sa langit
Ang matamaay wag magalit
O bato-bato bato sa langit
Ang matamaan ay
Wag masyadong halata
Wag kang masyadong halata
Hehey, (Wag kang masyadong halata)
(Wag kang masyadong halata)
Yeahhey...

Some people should never run for office again.
Hey, megalomaniac!
You're not Jesus
Yeah, you're no Elvis
Wash your hands clean of yourself, baby and
Step down, step down
Step down
!!!

Are You An Eating Machine?

On June 26 up until August 15 2009, Filipino eating machines can go to the nearest 7-Eleven store in their area and avail of the Big Bite® Match Combo that contains five jumbo hotdog sandwiches of their choice and one Big Gulp.

To prove that they take competitive eating seriously, 7-Eleven flew in internationally renowned competitive eater Tom "Goose" Gilbert to serve as an inspiration to aspiring Filipino gurgitators.

According to Armi Andrade, 7-Eleven's Food Service Division Manager,"It's a relatively new sport so we want to show an example on how the rest of the world is doing it. And there's no better way to do this than by bringing in a champoin like Tom Goose."

Tom Goose is one of competitive eating's most memorable debut performances when he defeated several veteran professional eaters at the 2nd annual World Italian Sausage Eating Championship in 2006. Currently, he is the world record holder in chicken wings eating and has other titles under his belt.

During the trade launch, Tom Goose showed us how he can eat 10 hotdog sandwiches in less than 4 minutes.

Patting Myself On the Back

Re-posted from Between Bites (janedchua.com)

Patting Myself On the Back
Words: Jane Chua

Most people are trapped in the traffic of everyday routine. It is good to get out of yourself every now and then.

Being the “family man,” I expend strength and bring order at home while the other 9 hours of my day are enchained to building a career. When you are on the road of life for too long, an occasional stopover wouldn’t hurt.

Traveling is the break I give myself when my body shouts for a pause from the daily grind. The body is a temple, a trinity of the physical, mind and soul. Traveling can be a vacation for physical and mental body at the same time that it can enrich a soul.

Handling channel carriage arrangements, there is a lot of push and pull happening in negotiations. Managing several contracts and being the middleman, my eyes need to catch the fine details. The paperwork pile on my desk towers up while emails with counterparts in Singapore, Hong Kong and other parts of the world never seem to end. It’s good to challenge myself and stretch my limits. I have always had that interest in legalities anyway. But you and I shouldn’t be imprisoned by the corners of our desk or by the comfort of habit and knowing what to do.

Just open yourself up, walk right out and see the world. Take a detour from the monotony and delight yourself in becoming a stranger for at least once in your life.

Wander around, smell the flowers and let the sun kiss your face. Transplant yourself into a somewhere completely different than home and be in for a pleasant surprise. There is a spark of newness in every travel. Peel a part of you that you have not undressed before. Take a plunge into the unknown.

To travel is also to learn and grow. Discover other cultures. Encounter new people. Observe what other society dictates while setting yourself free from the dictates of your own society.

The unfamiliar says hello back to me and I foster an appreciation of both the world at large and the chair waiting in front of the computer back in my office. I like the exploration but I suddenly miss the sense of comfort that I sometimes take for granted.

I usually come home with a renewed outlook in life. This is a reward for myself I will not find in merely shopping.

Since the advent of the A(H1N1) virus, my traveling plans have been kicked to the curb. I need to find new ways to crack the routine spell.

The slog doing the usual everyday activities can drain me at a certain point. Below are some suggestions on how to increase the height of LIVING:

Learn a new hobby, skill or language.

There is always something to learn. Not because we no longer attend required schooling that we discontinue learning too. Don’t let your mind decay into only reading magazines, surfing the net or watching the tube. Pick up a new hobby. One is never too old to start a collection of something. Gardening can be a good hobby and helpful to the environment as well. Owning a DSLR doesn’t mean possessing the skill of capturing invaluable moments at its best so learn about photography. Be taught how to play a guitar. Speak a foreign language by enrolling in short courses.

Laugh at least once a day

Laugh often, live much. Fate has a very good sense of humor. Why shouldn’t we?

In our operations meeting, my 20’s something age is the youngest in a boardroom full of 30s, 40s and 50s managers, heads and VPs. Dealing with many seniority and striving to deliver a stalwart unquestionable performance every time, I noticed that my attitude has become more uptight and serious. I constantly press myself not to err fearing that erring is a step backward. Been successful so far attaining a 3.6 rating (4) for 2 consecutive years but a chunk of me was sacrificed to achieve that. My youthful exuberance.

I’ve taken things much slower now and pulled the stick out of my “trunk” (refer to Black Eye Peas’ My Humps) and ceased to be stiff. A chuckle every now and then doesn’t mean you take your job less seriously. A giggle is a soft reliever from stress. It is after all just another day, another dollar.

Allow yourself to laugh at mistakes. Say during a big client presentation, you kept referring to the competitor’s brand instead of your client’s because it was in fact your ex-boyfriend’s favorite beer that gives him gas. Don’t beat yourself up. Your boss may fire you, but have a good laugh.

It doesn’t have to take a hysterically funny scenario to be able to laugh out loud. It’s good to be silly sometimes.

Exercise while at work

Regular exercise can help one reduce the risk of developing many health-related problems. For example, exercise can combat obesity, improve circulation, and it can help prevent serious conditions, such as heart attack and stroke.
When I can’t find the time to go to the gym, I do simple exercises at my little corner. Sitting on the chair with my back straight, I do leg lifts or bicycle motions, which also help strengthen the mid-section. I can do this while reading emails or cleaning out my inbox.

A little stretching of the shoulders, tricep and back prevents muscle soreness and makes your body limber and flexible. Breathing exercises are also stationary and can reduce tension.

Engage yourself in a conversation with a wise or a well-traveled man.

There is a big yellow light blinking on traveling abroad nowadays. Proceed with caution. Instead of taking a health risk with the flu going around, chatting with a well-traveled man can still broaden your horizons. Hear stories about his travel and let your imagination soar with his treasured memories. Lengthy discussion with a profound man unwraps a reflective understanding of the world or world issues you might not have opened your eyes to.

Make healthy food choices

Eating right can help prevent future diseases and lessen stress levels. A balanced varied diet provides more energy too. Once in a while though, we are faced with strong cravings. Cravings can be pretty bad especially if you are craving for junk food. I like nibbling on chips and licking off the flavorsome crumbs off my fingers particularly when I am frazzled at the office. When I need to brood, I sulk with a pint of my favorite ice cream. Your eating habits also affect your mental condition. Notice how easily irritated you are when you skipped a meal or finished a big bag of deep fried fries.

Sweets and foods that are high in fat or calories should be taken in moderation. A good alternative to satisfy your sweet cravings is yogurt.

The Nestle Fruit Selection Yogurt started my love affair with yogurt. I never thought I’d like yogurt until I tasted NFSY. I can chew on real fruit pieces in every spoonful of the flavorful lush. Yogurt is low in fat, which allows me to indulge more without the excessive calories. It’s also packed with millions of live microorganisms, which is what your body needs for good digestion. I like the fact that it’s bursting with flavor yet healthy at the same time. What could be better?

I stack up NESTLÉ Fruit Selection Yogurt in the office fridge. While it’s good for a quick breakfast or snack, I use it as my luscious pre-filler very much like a salad pre-meal. Now, they have added 3 new delicious and intriguing flavors to the selection: Melon-Nata, Apple Cinnamon and Raspberry Apple. The interesting combinations give an extra dose of taste.

Cast off the inhibitions because it’s all full pleasure in a cup without the guilt! Rev up your energy and take in the luscious delight in every cup.

Nestle Fruit Selection Yogurt launched the
BE GOOD TO YOURSELF campaign. Reading what the campaign is about got me thinking about how I’ve been treating myself. Getting hurled into the every day express makes me miss out on how I take care of “ME”.

My pledge is to quit the chips and junk food altogether and increase my yogurt intake. I also want to take up a new hobby and lessen TV time. I further pledge to avoid poker rooms and see people at the yoga mat instead. Increasing my height of living is a fantastic life waiting to unfold. HELLO to a healthy and dynamic lifestyle!

After filling out the Be Good To Yourself form, I lean back on the chair and smile. Pop a Nestle Yogurt open and pat myself on the back for making the pledge. Have you patted yourself on the back lately for a good deed, a closed deal, or breaking a bad habit? Click here so YOU can make a pledge to start making better choices in your life. Each pledge will also trigger NESTLÉ Fruit Selection Yogurt to render a contribution to the Healthy Weight Fund. Say goodbye to NEEDLESS THINGS and say hello to a BETTER YOU!

We have all heard the old adage “love yourself before you love another.” Being good to yourself is not only buying the pair of designer shoes you have been dying to have. Try living out of the shoebox. Get the best out of life by bringing out the best in you.

Loving yourself is the secret.

Buffet Dinner With My Furry Friend

Being the animal lover that I am, I wanna go to this event with Chilli and support PAWS. According to the organizer yesterday, there are 80 tickets left.
I'm debating whether to go or not since price is P1,500 for single ticket and P2,000 for double (includes buffet for you and your dog).

Chilli, the Wong's Family Dog.

I read from the PhilippinePetFinder.com forum that the owner and his giant Alaskan Malamute, named Sumo, will be attending this event.

Look closely and see how Sumo appears to be bigger than Buzi.
Sumo with Buzi @ the owner's kennel.

Left Right Left Right

As a sign of gratitude to the fans of Coldplay, they released a live album, to given away for free, last May 15, 2009.

The album is available in their official website.

Click on the link to download for FREE
http://www.coldplay.com/lrlrl/lr.html

Aside from being a sign of gratitude, this album is meant to say that this is how they sound like at the moment.

According to the official website, the live album was downloaded more than 3.5 million times.

Pardon me, I can't help but mention this. The title of the album reminds me of my favorite Family Computer game.
Up, up, down, down. Left, right, left, right. Haha!

Cyber Sandbox

Sandbox is a wide container filled with sand where kids can play. It develops the child's imagination and creativity. With buckets and shovels, they can build sandcastles, dig holes, burry things, etc. This is also a place for children to socialize and meet new friends.

I remember playing in a pile of sand in our garage with my brother-- He-Man and Transformers action figures coming out from the sand and beating up the toy soldiers and the G.I. Joes behind the sand barricade.

Fast forward to 2009, sandbox goes digital and enters cyberspace. Like the sandbox we're used to, www.mysandbox.com is also a place to play, enjoy, and meet new friends. Get in the box whether your using your laptop or through your mobile phone!

WHAT IS SANDBOX?
In Sandbox, you can create a profile and update your status for your friends to see. You can upload and view photos and videos, write a blog or join a forum discussion. You can send and receive email and open a live chat. You can download music and games or watch live specials and popular TV episodes. And you can do all this even when you're away from your PC because Sandbox puts all this on the mobile phone. It's a great web experience you can take with you wherever you go.

----------------------

  1. What is Sandbox?
Sandbox is a portal that brings content and services you love on the web all in one place.

In Sandbox, you can create a profile and update your status for your friends to see. You can upload and view photos and videos, write a blog or join a forum discussion. You can send and receive email and download music, games and various other content.

  1. What makes Sandbox different from other websites?
    • An online store that allows you to download music, games and movie-themed content to your mobile.
    • Tunes, the music store features the latest content including local favorites. You’re not limited to hits in just the US or UK.
    • Because it’s delivered to your mobile, it can be charged to either your prepaid load or billed above your postpaid plan. No need for credit cards.
    • You’re not charged in dollars. So no need to worry.
    • MyGroups simplifies social networking to something visual, fun, intuitive and feature-filled but straightforward.
    • Change your status, upload and download photos and videos, post blogs and send private messages to friends in fewer clicks than it normally takes on other social networks.
    • You can even create groups and your own mobile site.
    • Plus cool Forum discussions will keep you informed and hook you up with people interested in the same things.
    • And Mail makes sure you never miss out on the client’s or the boss’s urgent messages.
    • Find all these in just one place. No need to hop from site to site to site and suffer multiple sign-ups and logins. Sign up once, login once and get rockin’ on the web.
  1. Who can register?
Anyone with access to the web can visit and browse the sandbox portal and register as a user.
  1. Do I really have to register?
To enjoy everything that sandbox has to offer, it is best that you register. Prior to registering, you can already browse content on Tunes, Games and Moviemania and enjoy available previews. But if you want to purchase content you like for your mobile phone or try MyGroups, check out Forums and get Mail, you’ll want to register.
  1. Does registration take long?
Not at all. It can be completed in less than a minute. Just click on register and fill out the required fields.
  1. Can I use the services right away after registering?

Not right away but definitely soon after. After completing registration, next step is the activation of your registered account. This involves getting a link and an activation code minutes after a successful registration. Smart mobile users will get this via text message and email. Other users will get this via email. This is to make sure that the person who registered and the owner of the email address and/or mobile number are one and the same. To complete the process, simply go to the link in the message and enter the activation code. Wait a few seconds for the confirmation and you’re on. All services, except Mail, are available to all users after registration. Currently, users with Smart mobile numbers will automatically get an email address and inbox on sandbox Mail, while others will not. We will let you know if or when this changes.

  1. How many times do I need to register?

You only need to register once. And because our system keeps a record, you don’t have to re-register on each service. We call this the single sign-on. Keeps things simple. Makes it easy. You register only once for Tunes, Games, Moviemania, MyGroups, Forums and Mail.

  1. Do I register separately for forums, mygroups and email?

The single sign on automatically registers you for all services. No need to sign on separately for each of them.

  1. Can I change my username and password later on?

Changing your username and password implies the creation of a new account which means you will not hold a record of your information or activity from your previous or original account. So unless you plan to keep more than one account active, the best thing is to keep the same username and password. If you must create another account for any reason, you must use specify another mobile number and email address that will be unique to that new account. Otherwise registration errors will result.

  1. What if I forget my username and/or password?

If you forget your password, just click on the Forgot password link and your password, along with your username, will be sent to your email address. Just use it the next time you login. Retrieve via web answer security question.

  1. Do I have to have a mobile number to register?

If you’re buying content to be delivered to your mobile, you have to have a mobile number. But if you don’t you should at least have an email address to allow us to send you an activation code that completes your activation.

  1. Do I need to register to preview, purchase and download content like music?

You can preview without registering but downloading content requires that you are both registered and logged in. If you’re not registered and you click to purchase and download content, you will be taken to the registration page. If you’re registered and not logged in, you will be shown the login page.

  1. Can I preview all content types and titles?

You can click on all the previews offered. It’s free. But not all content types and titles will have a preview. On Tunes, most of the interesting music titles we feature will have 15 second previews. Previews of content for Moviemania and Games will depend on the availability of preview material.

  1. Will I be charged for previews?

Absolutely not. So you’re welcome to check out available previews that interest you.

  1. Who can download?

Currently, only those with Smart mobile numbers will be able to successfully download content to their mobile phones. An announcement could be made if this changes.

  1. How much will I be charged for content I download?

Depends on the content type and title. When you hit the download button, the price will show and you’ll be asked to confirm the purchase. So you don’t have to worry. Most content will cost anywhere from just P15 to P50 per download.

  1. How will I be billed for content I download?

If you’re a prepaid mobile user, the download will be charged against your existing load. On postpaid, you will be billed on top of the plan charges.

  1. How do I know that the content has been delivered to my mobile phone?

When you download content you will a message will appear to confirm your purchase. After clicking to accept the charges, a message will appear to confirm if your purchase was successful. If successful, a purchase pin will be sent to your mobile phone a few seconds after. Enter the pin in the purchase confirmation page and a link will be sent to the mobile phone number you specified. Open the link to download the content to your mobile.

  1. What will I do with the link I get on my mobile phone?

Simply click the link to open it. If the phone asks if you want to install or save the content, just click yes to get the content into your phone. Content will reside in your phone’s native or expansion memory depending on what you specified. You might have to look in several folders to locate it.

  1. When will I be charged?

You will be charged when you successfully open a link and install or activate the content to your phone.

  1. If I hit the download button and I change my mind can I still cancel the download?

If that happens to you, just calmly hit the cancel button and the purchase won’t go through.

  1. If the content isn’t successfully delivered to my mobile phone will I still be charged?

If your mobile phone doesn’t get the link by sms or if the link doesn’t open, preventing you from saving and later on enjoying the content on your phone, you will not be charged.

  1. Can I download content to my pc?

Currently, no.

  1. Can I use content from my phone on another phone?

Yes, under certain conditions. For instance, you can save the content in an expansion memory card and insert that into another phone. The game might load and the music might play if the content is compatible with the phone unit’s make and model.

  1. Can I forward content?

Currently, no. The labels and the artists don’t allow it.

  1. Does the content purchased have a limited life or usability?

Once you’ve purchased content on sandbox it’s yours to enjoy as much as you want. On games, there may be trial versions which would be playable only within a limited period.

  1. Will it work anywhere in the world?

If it’s on the web, it works everywhere in the world. Guess what? Sandbox is on the web.

Tinguinha Seminar Update

This is a late post, it's been almost a month since the Tinguinha visited our gym.

After years of being off the mat, the drills and techniques he taught us brought back my open guard movement and flexibility. He updated us with new ways on how to control the spider and sitting-up guard-- very enlightening.

Hope I get to train more so the years I dedicated to train and fight won't go to waste. Of course, also to bring me back to shape and to stay healthy.

Here's our team picture with Tinguinha.
