Pinoy Pride 14: Resorts World Manila

This will be one of the biggest fights in the country this year! From the regional bouts that they do, ALA Boxing Promotions and ABS-CBN Sports bring Pinoy Pride 14 to Manila.

Headlining Pinoy Pride 14 is Donnie Nietes vs. Felipe Salguero. The Mexican Felipe Salguero will be a tough opponent for Nietes. He is WBO rated #7 Jr. Flyweight, IBF World rated #7 Jr. Flyweight, Former WBF World Light Flyweight Champion, former WBC Youth World Light Flyweight Champion, won KO5 recently over world rated Carlos Melo, has a high knockout percentage of 57.89%.

I had the privilege of talking to Donnie and learned that he's more than just a boxer. He has a very inspirational story behind his success. Being one of the longest reigning Filipino champions holding 2 belts, I feel that Donnie is under-promoted and deserves to be in the same ranks in the hearts of the Filipinos as Pacquiao, Donaire, and Villoria.

In our brief talk, I didn't know that Donnie...
-        WAS MENTORED AND TRAINED BY HIS UNCLE,— Dan Nietes, who was also a World Champion
-         WAS A JANITOR-- of Mr. Aldeguier and was the only one who had the guts to go in the snake pit to feed and clean the snakes
-         HAD BIG DREAMS—and believed he could do better than other boxers, he eventually approached ALA and asked if he could try his hand on boxing
-         IS A PINOY CHAMPION WITH 2 BELTS-- With hard work and determination, he has become ONE out of the FIVE Filipino world champions (Manny Pacquiao, Nonito Donaire, Donnie Nietes, Brian Villoria, Sonny Boy Jaro)
-         IS ONE OF THE LONGEST REIGNING CHAMPIONS2nd to Gabriel “Flash” Elorde; Alongside Luisito Espinosa, Donnie Nietes, Manny Pacquiao because he was determined to follow his dreams
-         IS THE BEST PINOY BOXER NEXT TO PACQUIAO—according to Freddie Roach
-         IS A NEW FATHER-- and this gives more meaning and motivation for him to train and fight harder.
-         IS NOW A HOMEOWNER AND DRIVES A SPORTS CAR-- After years of dedication to boxing, Donnie is now a proud home owner. He built a house in Cebu on a lot given to him as a gift by Mr. Antonio L. Aldeguer. The house built by the hands of both his Father, a photographer by profession and his Uncle
-         IS A BUSINESSMAN—Donnie has put up an agrivet business and has a small piggery which he plans to expand on that after his career in boxing
-         IS AN ADVENTURER—Donnie has a passion for the outdoors and is into biking. He is a member of Bike Talk Friendship Club (BTFC) that does regular day and night rides.

Wishing the ALA Boxers the best of luck in fighting for the Filipino Pride!

Donaire VS Vasquez

Studio 23 to telecast Chavez-Rubio fight
ABS-CBN AIRS DONAIRE-VAZQUEZ TITLE BOUT

Pound-for-pound fighter Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire will contend for the WBO junior featherweight title against the Puerto Rican former titlist Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. during a doubleheader titled “Welcome to the Future” at Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, to be aired on ABS-CBN on Sunday (Feb 5), 10:15 a.m.

The co-main event, also a title fight, will be a battle between Mexican sluggers Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and first-ranked challenger Marco Antonio Rubio.

The three-division world champion Donaire (27-1-0 18 KOs), who will stake his 26-bout winning streak, will once again be traipsing into new territory as he climbs up to the 122-pound class, a division once ruled by the younger Vazquez (21-1-1 18 KOs).

The pugilist from Puerto Rico entrenched himself in the title in 2010, when he knocked out General Santos City-native Marvin Sonsona. Vazquez Jr, the son of former world champion Wilfredo Vazquez Sr, defended the title twice, but fell prey to the Mexican fighter Jorge Arce in 2011.

Arce has since relinquished the title in order to fight at 118 pounds and Vazquez is poised to reclaim glory. But for Donaire, who was the Philippine Sportswriters Association’s co-Athlete of the Year for 2011, it may be an opportune time to embellish his resume with yet another division title.

Meanwhile, WBO middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (44-0-1 31 KOs) will be challenged by contender Marco Antonio Rubio (53-5-1 46 KOs) in the co-main event.

Chavez Jr., the son of legendary boxing champion Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., is undefeated, while Rubio is in a two-year winning streak. The fight will follow the Donaire-Vazquez bout and will air at 1:00 p.m. on Studio 23.

Don’t miss these thrilling contentions for two world titles on Sunday (Feb 5). Catch the Donaire-Vazquez bout at 10:15 a.m. on ABS-CBN, and the Chavez-Rubio match at 1:00 p.m on Studio 23. A primetime telecast of the bouts will air on Studio 23 at 6:00 p.m.
